Best Locks for Storage Containers

Best Locks for Storage Containers

Now that you’ve decided to use a portable storage container to store all of your extra belongings, you need to start thinking about the best lock that you can use to keep them safe and secure. Most locks will fall into two categories; a padlock or a combination lock. There are many locks to choose from between these two types, and before you decide, it is best to ask yourself a few questions first:

How Valuable is Your Property?

You could just bring in your old lock that has been keeping your backyard shed secure and use that, but you may want to consider some alternatives. While your shed lock works well on the shed right outside your window, you will want something more secure than that for a storage container that is not in view. While Porta-Stor facilities are secure, there is still a chance for someone to break in or vandalize your unit, especially if you are storing the container on different properties.

If you have made the decision to get a storage container to store some of your belongings, the chance that they hold some value is pretty good. Whether it’s pricey sports gear or sentimental items from your family, you want to keep everything protected. This is why a durable lock (not just that one from your shed) is important.

Where Will the Lock be Located?

Will your storage unit be inside or outside? You need to think of this as you choose a lock, because you will want a storage container lock that is tough enough to endure the outdoor elements. If a lock is not made for that, it can corrode over time due to moisture, cold, or heat, making it easier to break open. If your storage unit is outdoors, you will want to look into a brass or stainless steel lock. These metals will resist the elements better and last you much longer.

Types of Locks

Let’s go over the different types of locks out there, so you can make an informed decision on the right storage container lock for you:

Combination Locks

Combination locks have a set of numbers that must be turned in the right order for the lock to open. You can choose from a single-dial lock or a multiple-dial lock. Multiple-dial locks require the use of several combinations for the lock to open up, and most of the time the single dial lock actually offers better protection.

Single-Dial Combination Locks

This type of lock operates on a single sequence of numbers that need to be lined up on a rotating dial. These are typically opened by turning the dial in the correct sequence. When the correct sequence is used, you will hear a click indicating that the lock can be opened with a single tug.

Multiple-Dial Combination Locks

These locks use several rotating discs with notches cut into them. When the person that is operating the lock aligns the notches of the lock correctly, the lock can be opened. With the ability to better guess a multi-combination lock, it is less secure than the single combination lock.

It is usually best to use the multi-combination locks on things like bicycles and luggage and not on storage containers.

Padlocks

Using a padlock requires a key to both lock and unlock. They usually come with 2 keys. If you choose to use a padlock as your storage container lock, you need to be aware that the less expensive the lock, the poorer the quality of the materials. Using a poorly made lock will make it easier for someone to come and cut right through your lock. A good quality lock will have a harder shell and will have a double locking mechanism.

A high-quality padlock will require little maintenance and will be made of a harder brass or stainless steel. This is a great option if you have a storage container outside.

Handy Locks

These are the least expensive padlocks and are typically made with softer metal. The handy lock is not one that is recommended for use with a storage container, since they can easily be broken into. These are the types of locks that you usually see on gym lockers or bicycles.

General-Purpose Locks

A general-purpose lock offers more resistance to break-ins than the handy lock and is usually made of brass or stainless steel. The design of these locks offer better security and better protection from being cut open.

High Security Padlocks

Using a high security padlock means you are getting the most secure padlock you can find. It is made of the harder shell using brass or stainless steel. These locks have more pins inside the mechanism than most other locks, giving it the highest security.

Purchasing a lock will run you anywhere from $2 to $25, and some commercial-grade padlocks can run you up to $100. It can be worth the higher price if you want the best security possible for your belongings. No matter which lock you choose, just make sure you look into all options and purchase the best storage container lock for you. They all have their pros and cons, and there is sure to be one that fits your needs.

Tips for Lawn Equipment Storage

Tips for Lawn Equipment Storage

Fall is around the corner, and the weather is starting to change. It’s about time to go through all your outdoor lawn equipment and get them ready to store for the winter months. Or maybe you are moving and have the task of going through your garage or shed and getting all these things ready to store and move. Either way, this task can seem overwhelming, since there are so many tools that are sharp, odd shaped, dirty, and/or heavy. Fortunately, there are a few steps that you can take to make sure that your lawn equipment is ready for storage and that you store it in the most organized way possible.

Declutter

The first step to simplifying the packing and storing process is to dedicate some time to go through everything and toss out what you do not need. If that hose is completely bent out of shape or those hedge clippers are dull and warped beyond repair, do you really want to bother storing those things when you know you will not use them next year? Of course you don’t!

This is the time to stop feeling bad about tossing out junk or donating any duplicate items. If it is something you did not use while you were keeping up and enjoying your yard this year, chances are you will not use it next year. Clear it out so you have the space to store what you will actually use. Check out Porta-Stor’s blog on decluttering for more information.

Organize What’s Left

Now that you have tossed out those broken tools and decluttered all your lawn equipment, you need to get everything good and organized.

Hand Tools – Place all of these items in a handled bucket, basket, or other easy-to-access container. This way they are all together and easy for you to find and use as you go to work in your yard the next time.

Long-Handled Equipment – These types of items should all be bundled together and do not necessarily need to be stored in a box or tote.

Attachments – Take the attachments off of your power tools and other complex equipment and store them separately. This keeps them from coming apart and breaking while moving around placing in storage.

Equipment with Engines – The first thing you need to do is make sure that gas-powered items are clean of gasoline and oil and completely dry. Give them a good power wash and clean underneath. You can also get some protective covers for the blades, and make sure all attachments are taken off and stored away safely.

Organize Patio and Outdoor Areas

By going through all of the things on your deck or outdoor patio, you will find things to discard as well as things that will need to be packed with your outdoor equipment. Do a quick walk through and look over of these areas. Be sure to clean and dry what you can and get it ready to store. This could include your grill, which you will need to make sure is cleaned up and protected before putting into storage. If you are storing your outdoor furniture with your outdoor lawn equipment, make sure that is also clean and covered to prevent damage.

Over time, things will need to be replaced and some will go missing, but if you take the steps to go through, clean, and organize all of your outdoor lawn equipment each season, you are less likely to misplace or break something. Remember to label your storage totes and pack it all in your storage area in a way that will be easy to access. When filling a storage area, consider which items will need to be retrieved first, and put those closer to the front.

As you go to store your larger equipment like your lawn mower and patio furniture, remember to make sure they are well cleaned, completely dry, and have good covers over them. Even though they are in a storage container or shed, dust and other particles can still get to them. The better upkeep maintenance you do with these items, the longer they will last.

Event Planning Storage Solutions

Event Planning Storage Solutions

Whether you’re an event planner, you constantly get roped into hosting events for work or family gatherings, or you just like to help set up events for people as a fun past time, you’ve probably run up against storage problems. No matter how serious of a party planner you are, there are sure to be party supplies sitting all over the place. You need an event planning storage solution for all those tablecloths, centerpieces, and extra chairs! Let’s go over just how to store those party supplies so that you can be the most organized party planner around and have everything on-hand and ready to go when needed.

Store Your Extra Seating

From informal backyard parties to wedding receptions, if you are planning an event, you are sure to have extra seating you need to store. Whether it’s folding chairs or lounge chairs, there’s no way that your basement or garage has enough space for you to keep these extra seats. You also do not want to leave them outside to get damaged by the elements.

A great solution is to rent a portable storage container, where you can nicely stack all of these chairs and seat cushions. That way they will be out of the weather, out of the way, and remain clean, dry, and ready to use.

Tables, Tables, and More Tables

No matter the event you are planning, there is no doubt that you will need tables, and probably a lot of them. While you could just rent your tables for each event, over time it is sure to save you money to just have your own tables ready to use. You will always know the quality of what you are setting up and ensure that they are where you need them on-time. If you are renting tables for the many events you plan, it is probably because you have nowhere to store them!

If you decide to rent a storage container, you can easily store all of your tables in there. You will be sure that they are safe and secure. On top of that, you can also have the company move the portable storage unit to you next event’s location. That way you do not need to worry about how you will get the tables there or how you will get them back. As a bonus, the other reusable party supplies like chairs and centerpieces could be stored long-term in the container too.

Party Supplies

It probably goes without saying that with event planning comes lots of party supplies. There are only so many shelves and corners in your garage to hold all the serving platters, candles, and themed decorations!

Using a portable storage container to hold all of these supplies helps you ensure that everything is stored neatly and is easily accessible when you need it. Stacking the totes of supplies in an organized way can make it easier and less stressful as you look through them for your next event and helps you make sure they will not be damaged.

Pool Party Supplies

A pool party is a very specific type of event, but it is one that comes with a lot of large items that take up the most space in your home and can be the worst to store. Pool noodles, inflatables, and even deflated bounce houses are sure to be constantly in the way in your garage.

Using a storage container to house all of these big and bulky items will make it much easier to keep them clean, dry, and secure during the offseason when you are not using them. By keeping these types of items in a storage container, you will save yourself time from scrubbing them down, there will be less checking for holes or damage done from the weather, and (most importantly) they will be out of your way. Keep in mind that these items should be completely dry when you place them into storage to avoid issues with mold or mildew.

Sporting Events

If you are in charge of planning field days or track meets for school (or for friends and family), there are sure to be many things that need to be stored and kept safe until their next use. Placing a portable storage unit at the school or somewhere close gives you the space you need to keep those items secure and organized.

No matter what your needs are for the storage of your supplies, it is a safe bet that a storage container will help you greatly. Being able to store your tables, chairs, and other party supplies with ease will take the stress off of figuring out where to keep it all and allow you to focus on planning the best event possible!

Storage When Building a House

Storage When Building a House

When you decide to build a house, there are so many things that need to be done. From buying the land to picking out cabinets (and everything in between), there’s so much to think about. But what about all of your belongings? Where do you put everything while you are building your new dream home? The simple answer is a portable storage container! Using a storage container is a great solution for storing your extra stuff while your home is under construction.

Storage Will Help You Sell Your Current Home

If you need to sell your current home while you are building your new house, a storage container is a great solution. You can store a lot of stuff as you clean out your home and get it ready to show. Box all of those extra toys from your kid’s room and all the knick-knacks on those shelves in the living room.

Simply clearing out some of your family’s clutter and personal items helps you get your home ready to sell and lets you go ahead and go through some of the process before you move it all into a newly finished home. This clutter removal is key for making your house look great and sell for a better price. For more info on using portable storage for showing your home, check out Porta-Stor’s blog here.

Storage Can Help With Construction Delay

When you sit down with your builders, they are always optimistic that the construction of your home will go right on schedule with no delays. But we all know that this very rarely happens. The weather never cooperates. Maybe some supplies are not delivered on time, or the wrong tiles are sent instead.

In the event of construction delay, if you have already sold your previous home, staying with a family member, a friend, or at a motel may be the best solution for you. But what about all of your belongings? If you use a storage container, you will not have to worry about your stuff. No matter what kind of building issues may arise, you will not have the stress of worrying about your belongings if you store them safely and securely out of the way in a portable storage container.

You Can Start Purchasing New Items for Your Home

If you are building a new house, you will for sure be needing new appliances, furniture, and other goodies. If you have a storage container, you can go ahead and buy those items when you see them on sale and just store them away. This way, that stress of hoping that couch is still there or that sale price is still good on that dishwasher months later will be gone. You can go ahead and get them now and check those things off your long list of to-do’s.

You Are Allowed to Move At Your Own Pace

When you take that leap and decide to build a house, you have also taken on the challenge of getting your current home ready to sell and split your focus between two huge projects. Staging your home for the buyer has a huge impact on the sale, and most buyers will not be interested if they walk into a home that is unorganized and full of clutter. Using a storage container to store your clutter, as mentioned above, is a great way to help get your home staged to sell. Since you can keep your extra stuff in the container for as long as you need, you don’t need to feel as rushed to get everything done.

Once you are in your new home, you probably do not want to just throw tons of boxes of stuff into the middle of the floor. Having a storage container with your belongings securely packed inside will allow you to unpack and organize at your own pace. You can leave some items in the storage container until you are ready to bring them into your new home, and you will not be tripping over boxes that you have no idea what to do with yet.

One of the best benefits of using a Porta-Stor container for storage is the fact that we will bring the container to you when you need it. We can drop it off at your old home and leave it there as long as you need. Then when you are ready, we will come pick it up and take it for storage at our facility or drive it directly to your new location!

Storage is a Stress Reliever

No matter your reason for needing the storage container, knowing that your belongings are secured and in a safe place while you build a house and sell your current one lessens your stress level. There are many sizes and options to choose from when you are deciding which storage container best fits your needs.

Whether you simply need more space or are using it to store belongings while you build your home, it’s a fact that portable storage containers are a great resource. The length of time you use it and the size you choose is up to you. Check out Porta-Stor’s guide to choosing a shipping container size here for more info!
